FERNBOMBER UBER DEM ATLANTIK : ein Erlebnisbericht vom Einsatz des Condorgeschwaders [Main]
ShortSummary
Documentary account of an anti-shipping patrol by a Focke Wulf 200C-1 Condor bomber of I/KG40 based at Bordeaux-Merignac .
FullSummary
(Reel 1) Huge hangar doors are opened and a Fw 200C-1 with the KG40 ring-round-the-world nose insignia is pushed onto the airfield apron prior to being prepared for a mission against British shipping in the Atlantic. Geschwaderkommodore Petersen, wearing Knight's Cross, briefs the captain of the plane as they stand with two other officers beside a map of the French Atlantic coast. Preparations commence with fuelling up, loading 551 lb bombs and handing 7.9mm MG15 guns and magazines into the fuselage. After nightfall four members of the five-man crew, wearing astrakhan caps, enter the plane after shaking hands with Luftwaffe personnel on the ground. Day-for-night air-to-air shots show the Condor flying over the ocean, and interior shots show ventral and dorsal gun position, the navigator at work and the pilot and co-pilot in the cockpit. Co-pilot hands binoculars to pilot on spotting a possible target on the ocean below.
(Reel 2) Target is identified as enemy shipping and crew prepare for attack, before Condor, with bomb doors opened, commences strafing run over small cargo vessel. Bomb falls near (another) cargo vessel and Condor peels away for another two runs, strafing the length of a cargo vessel and bombing ships in a convoy, including one with a name almost visible. Ship explodes. Condor (F8+LH) leaves the convoy for long flight back to base, as happy crew have coffee from thermos flask and eat sausages. Navigator plots the course and wireless operator contacts base where message is received.Condor crosses the coastline and touches down. Crew members (six) step down from plane and captain describes with his hands their successful engagement. New tally is painted onto side of plane, which already indicates about ten victories at Narvik and eighteen against England.

FullSummary
I. German restoration of Poznan theatre. After utter neglect in recent years by Poles, old German town theatre of Posen (Poznan) is being restored. Workmen decorate the interior while costume makers and set designers work behind the scenes on an unspecified new production.
II. Ballet at Berlin's Metropol Theatre. Dancers in Spanish-style costumes perform the tambourine ballet from the show "Frauen im Metropol".
III. Franz Lehar conducts "The Land of Smiles" in Paris. Composer conducts the 1,038th performance of his operetta at the Théatre de la Gaieté Lyrique, where the audience includes many men in German uniform. After an orchestral excerpt, Lehar appears on stage with the five principal singers whom he congratulates.
IV. Deep snow in Central Europe. Brandenburg Gate stands outlined in snow-covered Berlin. In Thuringia children ski over the tops of village houses embedded in snow. Snowed-in train is dug free. In Prague view from Charles Bridge shows Hradcany Castle on far side of the Elbe; snow plough clears St Wenceslas Square. Deep snow covers roads in Bohemian countryside. In Rumania (Romania) lorries stand stuck in the snow on the roads to Ploesti and Giurgiu, as small group of Rumanian soldiers and one German soldier look on.
V. Danish wedding on ice. Danish swimmers celebrate a wedding on iced-over water, into which they and their guests inevitably fall.
VI. International dog show in Switzerland. Close-ups of canine competitors show alsatians, bulldogs, terriers, wolfhounds, greyhounds, whippets, chows, Pekingese, poodles and other breeds on display.
VII. Norwegian fishing off Lofoten Islands. Large fleet of small fishing boats fish in area said to be important for caviar. Fishermen bait hooks on line and pull in large numbers of fish, which are then gutted.
VIII. Signature of German-Russian economic and political accords. Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov and German Ambassador to Moscow Count von Schulenburg sign agreements broadening the economic exchange between Russia and Germany, arranging for the emigration of Germans from the Soviet Union republics of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia and finally fixing the German-Russian frontier "in the northern sector" (formerly Poland). (End of Reel 1)
IX. Searchlight production. Giant searchlights (150cm Flak-Schweinwerfer 1937) in production are tested in factory before completion. Searchlights are deployed by Luftwaffe flak unit on seafront of town (possibly Channel coast) and shine through the night.
X. Paratroop training. View of German paratroops training focuses on former heavyweight champion Max Schmeling, seen in ground practice prior to making drop with other paratroops from Junkers Ju 52. Flieger Schmeling releases parachute harness after reaching ground.
XI. Jagdgeschwader 26 engages Spitfires over Channel coast. Pilots of Jagdgeschwader 26 scramble to their Messerschmitt Bf 109Es after flare is fired from Very pistol. JG 26 commander Oberstleutnant Galland, with a cigar in his mouth, climbs into his cockpit. Tailplane of his Bf 109E bears 56 victory marks, then same plane is filmed in flight revealing Mickey Mouse insignia beneath cockpit. Camera-gun film records a stern attack on a Spitfire and another Spitfire descending off the coast trailing black smoke.

ShortSummary
Built at the Boeing plant at Renton, Washington and was accepted by the United States Air Force in May 1945. It wa initially allocated to the 421st Base Unit, 4th Air Force, then to the 410th Base Unit, Air Transport Base and subsequently to the 3040th Aircraft Storage Squadron, Air Material Command. In February 1952 it was allocated to the 9th Air Base Group and in March it joined the 307th Bomb Group, Far East Air Force at Kadena Air Force Base on Okinawa. The 307th Bomb Group was one of the groups that took part in the bombing of Korea by the allies before returning to the USA in July 1953. In October 1954 the aircraft returned to the 3040th Aircraft Storage Squadron. It was subsequently converted to a T29A trainer in 1955 and joined the 4750th Air Defence Wing at Yuma County Airport, Arizona. In November 1956 it was sent to the Naval Weapons Centre, China Lake, California, as a target tug and was subsequently parked in open storage in the desert. In October 1977 the Museum learnt of the existence of several B29's parked in the open at China Lake and in 1979 the United States Navy generously offered to donate one of them to the Museum. Feasibility studies showed that it would be cheaper and preferable to restore the aircraft to flying condition and fly it to Duxford rather than to dismantle and transport by sea. A potentially airworthy aircraft was chosen and a contractor sought to carry out the work necessary to restore the aircraft sufficiently to fly it back to the UK. The contractor, Aero Services of Tuscon, Arizona who had previous experience restoring two other B29's, one of which flew out to join the Confederate Air Force Museum at Harlington, Texas, took six months to complete the work required. The Imperial War Museum's Chief Engineer, Geoff Bottomley overseeing the work and locating original spare parts for the aircraft. After additional work and test flights had taken place at Mojave, California and Tucson, Arizona, the aircraft then started the 7,000 mile flight to its future home, landing at Duxford on the 2 March 1980.
FullSummary
Boeing B-29 Superfortress: Second World War long-range heavy bomber. On 6 August 1945 a B-29 dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
The most advanced bomber produced during the Second World War, the B-29 made a vital contribution to the defeat of Japan. It carried the atomic bombs which were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 killing 115,000 people instantly, while many others died subsequently of wounds and radiation sickness. Japan surrendered on 14 August, 5 days after the attack on Nagasaki.
In 1938 Boeing began to design the replacement for the B-17. The B-29 project was given a high priority, as it was the only bomber with sufficient range to attack Japan. The B-29 proved to be an outstanding aircraft with many advanced features including a partly pressurised fuselage and remote controlled gun turrets.
After the capture of the Marianas Islands, B-29s of the 20th Air Force launched a strategic bombing campaign on the Japanese home islands. Initial high level attacks in daylight produced disappointing results and heavy losses, so low level attacks using incendiaries by night were substituted. In early 1945 these raids completely destroyed the centres of several large Japanese cities, including Tokyo. By VJ Day nearly 4,000 B-29s had been completed in the largest and most complex aircraft production programme of the Second World War.
B-29A-BN serial number 44-61748 was built at Renton, Washington in 1944 and served with several USAAF and USAF units. During the Korean War it was assigned to the 307th Bomb Wing and operating from Okinawa flew bombing raids against communications targets. The aircraft was later acquired by the US Navy for experimental work and eventually stored at China Lake, California. The aircraft was flown to Duxford in March 1980.

Consolidated B-24D Liberator forward fuselage.
The most numerous American bomber of the Second World War, used by the US 8th and 15th Air Forces in the bombing offensive against Germany in 1942-1945.
Of similar size to the B-17 Fortress, the Liberator was a later and more advanced design, the prototype flying in 1939. The B-24 was built in larger numbers than any other American aircraft of the Second World War. Five production plants delivered 19,256 Liberators. The Ford Motor Company, using automobile industry mass production techniques, built 6,792 at its Willow Run plant.
B-24s flew one of the most famous American bombing raids of the war, Operation Tidal Wave, the raid on Ploesti. On 1 August 1943 they made a low-level attack on the Romanian oil fields, which supplied one-third of German high octane fuel. Only the Liberator had the range to reach these targets from airfields in North Africa. Of the 179 aircraft despatched 56 were lost and of 1,726 airmen involved, 500 lost their lives. Five airmen received the Medal of Honor, a record for one operation. With its long range, the Liberator also played a key Coastal role with the US Navy and RAF Command against German U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic.

On 1 August 1943 they made a low-level attack on the Romanian oil fields, which supplied one-third of German high-octane fuel. Only the Liberator had the range to reach these targets from airfields in North Africa. Of the 179 aircraft despatched 56 were lost and of 1,726 airmen involved, 500 lost their lives. Five airmen received the Medal of Honor, a record for one operation.
With its long range, the Liberator also played a key role with the US Navy and RAF Coastal Command against German U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic.
This particular Liberator aircraft was produced in January 1949. It is one of 1,677 B-24Ms built by the Ford Motor Company at its Willow Run plant using automobile industry mass production techniques. This example had no significant operational service and is painted to represent DUGAN, which flew with the US 8th Air Force in the 578th Squadron, 392nd Bombardment Group, carrying the radio call letter C for Charlie. From February to April 1945 DUGAN flew 28 combat missions, including raids on Berlin and the Magdeburg oil refineries. DUGAN finally returned to the USA in June of the same year.

ShortSummary
28 May 1945 - Delivered from the Douglas Aircraft Company - Long Beach, California.
31 May 1945 - Received by the Maintenance Division, Syracuse Army Air Base, New York - placed into storage having flown 20hrs 25mins.
2 Nov 1945 - A further 35mins were flown before the aircraft was dropped from the USAAF inventory by transfer to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation Altus AAF Oklahoma - apparently remained at Syracuse.
17 Feb 1947- American Aviation Historical Society recorded this date as that when the aircraft was purchased by Colonel Andres Soriano for $13,750. This seems rather early when compard with other doncumentation (see 23 Nov 1948.)
21 Feb 1947- Received at Altus (recorded as Altos) for Transocean Air Lines. Accepted by Samuel L Wilson who was to fly the aircraft for Col Soriano.
22 May 1947 - Registered to Transocean Air LInes of Oakland Municipal Airport, California as NL68269.
1947/48 - AAHS record that the aircraft was used regularly for flights between Oakland and Manila.
7 Oct 1948 - Recorded as received at Oakland California. It is assumed that the refitting of the interior to an executive configuration occurred prior to this date.
23 Nov 1948 - Sold to Colonel Andres Soriano of San Francisco - bill of sale from Transocean Air Lines. The aircraft was fitted with a seven seat lounge in the nose position, toilet, buffet with drinks cabinet, refrigerator and office. Extra fuel tanks were installed in the bomb bay and new autopilot fitted.
12 Jan 1949 - Registered to Colonel Soriano then President of Philippine Air LInes and named 'San Miguel'. Flown regularly between Oakland and Manila by Captain Wilson who was on loan from Transocean Air lines.
14 Oct.1949 - Bill of sale-purchased by General Council ot the Assemblies of God Inc. Springfield, Missouri.
28 Oct 1949 - Registered to the Assemblies of God and renamed Ambassador 11. It replaced Ambassador 1, a Curtiss C46 Commando, having longer range and greater four engined safely in its task of flying missionaries to South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The nose eventually carried names of 38 countries which Ambassador 11 had visited in its first year of operation.
Jan 1950 - First journey of Ambassador 11 was to Mexico City.
20 July 1951 - A bill of sale to Albert J Leeward. The sale was forced by increased insurance costs caused by the Korean War and other trouble spots. Regular scheduled airline services were also improving by this time.
28 Aug 1951 - Formally registered to Albert J Leeward.
1952 - Sold to the office of the Air Attache French Government in Washington - CAA cancelled the registration on 3 Nov 1954.
30 Dec 1952 - Received by Institute Geographique Nationale Creil near Paris, France with 1475 airframe hours. Converted for aerial survey work.
18 Feb 1972 - Grounded at Creil after flying 6808 hrs and 40mins and cannibalised for spares to keep other B-17s flying.
20 Nov 1973 - Offered for sale without engines, instruments or radios for 30,000 Francs, then worth some o2,860.
May 1975 - Purchased by Euroworld Ltd. together with an airworthy B-17 44-85784 (F-BGSR) later to become G-BEDF - 'Sally B' of B-17 Preservation Ltd. Both aircraft arrived at Duxford later that month.
January 1978 - After being used for spares to maintain 'Sally B', the aircraft was bought by the Imperial War Museum who started a major re-conversion and conservation programme to restore the aircraft, now called Mary Alice back to its wartime configuration. The aircraft now carries the marking of a B-17G 42-31983 flown by Lieutenant Dan Knight of the 615th Bomb Squadron 401st Bombardment Group based at Deenethorpe in Northampshire, England 1944.
FullSummary
Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress: the best known American bomber of the Second World War, used by the US 8th and 15th Air Forces in the bombing offensive against Germany in 1942-45.
The B-17 Flying Fortress was one of the aircraft which put into practice the United States Army Air Force's doctrine of daylight high altitude precision bombing. Attacks on Germany, starting in January 1943, were mostly carried out by the US 8th Air Force based in the United Kingdom, where there were over twenty-five Bomb Groups equipped with B-17s.
The B-17, with its thirteen machine guns, carried the heaviest defensive armament of any bomber and undertook daylight bombing raids in massive close formations which, it was thought, would be capable of defending themselves against German fighter attack without fighter cover. However, by mid-1943, on daylight raids deep into Germany, the 8th Air Force was losing so many aircraft to German fighters that the Americans were forced to curtail their offensive. Not until the introduction of the P-51 Mustang, which with long-range fuel tanks could escort the bombers all the way to their targets, did the American bombing offensive make its decisive contribution to the destruction of Nazi Germany.
Half the 36 awards of the Medal of Honour in the Second World War were to men serving in B-17 crews. Over 12,600 B-17s were produced.
This B-17 has been rebuilt and painted to represent B-17G serial number 42-31983 which served with the 615th Bomb Squadron, 401st Bomb Group, at Deenethorpe, Northamptonshire from March 1944 to May 1945. Known to have flown at least 98 combat missions the bomber incurred battle damage on several, and was shot up severely on five. In combat actions a crew member was killed and five wounded, one of whom received a Distinguished Service Cross, second highest US award for gallantry. At the end of the war Mary Alice was probably the most battle scarred B-17 in the 8th Air Force, but still airworthy enough to be flown back across the Atlantic to the USA. Mary Alice was named by its original pilot, Dan Knight, for his mother.
The true identity of this B-17G is serial 44-83735, built in 1945 and delivered too late to see war service.

ShortSummary
Close up view of the nose art and cockpit of Tornado GR1 ZA475 P (nicknamed Triffid Airways), No 15 Squadron RAF in a concrete blast pen at Muharraq, Bahrain.
ContextDescription
The Tornado Multi-Role Combat aircraft (MRCA) acted as the RAF’s principal strike weapon system from its introduction in 1982. The Tornado GR1 was the most numerous and important aircraft in the RAF inventory during the 1990 - 1991 Gulf War, where it operated in strike/attack and reconnaissance roles. 48 RAF Tornado GR1 aircraft were deployed to Muharraq International Airport, Bahrain as well as Tabuk and RSAF Dhahran in Saudi Arabia. The force comprised No 16 Squadron at Tabuk, No 15 Squadron supported by elements from Nos 9, 17 27, 31 and 617 Squadrons at Muharraq and No 31 Squadron supported by elements from Nos 9 and 14 Squadrons at Dhahran.
Tornado GR1s were amongst the first aircraft in action from 17 January 1991. During the war, the Tornado GR1 force flew 1,500 operational sorties divided almost equally between offensive counter air targets such as airfields and air defence sites, and interdiction targets such as bridges. A total of six GR1s was lost in action, five of which were involved in low-or medium- level attacks with 1,000 pound bombs and one that was flying a low-level JP233 mission. The final three weeks of the air war saw the Tornado GR1 force concentrating almost exclusively on day and night precision attacks dropping LGBs from medium altitude.
During the summer of 1990, John Keane was commissioned as the Imperial War Museum's 'official recorder' in the Gulf. Keane arrived in Bahrain in early February 1991 and spent a month with British troops in the desert prior to the start of the Ground Offensive. After a brief sojourn on board a Royal Navy vessel patrolling the Persian Gulf, he spent five days in Kuwait City following its liberation and saw the burning oil-wells and the desolation of the Basra Road.
As an artist , Keane used a camera and a video recorder rather than a sketchbook. He was given the same support and access to events as members of the press pool although once he arrived in Kuwait he was able to dictate his own schedule using a member of the Kuwaiti Resistance to guide him. On his return he began to make paintings based on his experiences and 35 works were exhibited at the Imperial War Museum in 1992.

ShortSummary
A gathering of men of No 467 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force to celebrate the completion of 100 operations by the Avro Lancaster R5868/`PO-S' (S for Sugar) after its sortie on 11 - 12 May 1944 to a communications target in Belgium. Below the cockpit of the Lancaster are the emblems indicating the number of operational flights and the award of three DSOs and two DFCs to crew members.
ContextDescription
The bomber started operations in 8/9 July 1942 with No 83 Squadron (where it was `OL-Q') and reputedly flew 79 trips from Wyton and Scampton until being withdrawn for a major overhaul in August 1943. It joined No 467 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force at Waddington in November 1943 and went on to a reputed 137 sorties, the last on 23 April 1945 to Flensburg.
Records indicate that the official 100th operation was possibly not the actual one. The aircraft is now on display at the RAF Museum, Hendon.

FullSummary
Returning to Cairo from Palestine and Syria in late June 1942, the official war artist Anthony Gross witnessed the confusions and damage caused by Rommel’s eastward offensive which had first begun in May. The German successes were in fact checked by General Auchinleck’s 8th Army at the First Battle of El Alamein on 1 July 1942.
Gross spent most of that month exploring the Nile Delta, then progressing towards the fighting line, recording medical operations and dressing station activities and even actions associated with the vicious fighting on Ruweisat Ridge on 21 July. He briefly visited El Alamein itself where he discovered conditions for painting were not favourable.
This is one of a series of twenty-seven pen and wash drawings bearing the main title ‘The Battle of Egypt’ made by Gross in circa July 1942.
