ShortSummary
Detailed ms diary, in 6 volumes, covering his service as a midshipman RNR (RN from August 1916) in the battleship HMS THUNDERER (2nd Battle Squadron, Grand Fleet) from December 1913 - December 1916, including the Battle of Jutland, and as a sub-lieutenant in the sloop POPPY, employed on anti-submarine patrol and convoy escort duties on the Coast of Ireland station at a time of considerable U-boat activity in the NW and SW Approaches (February 1917 - April 1918) and then on anti-submarine hydrophone patrols with the Northern Patrol based on Scapa Flow (April - June 1918). The most interesting entries relate to the Grand Fleet's anxieties about, and precautions against, the threat of submarine or air attack in the first months of the war, the suggestions of prejudice among RN officers against RNR officers and Jews, and his fellow officers' social life afloat and ashore throughout the war, while there are references in the 1917 - 1918 diaries to the sinking of a number of British merchant ships and to the loss of the cruiser HMS DRAKE (2 October 1917), the destroyer HMS WOLVERINE (12 December 1917), the destroyer HMS RACOON (9 January 1918) and the armed merchant cruiser CALGARIAN (1 March 1918). With the diaries is a copy of a monthly magazine (1935) containing a brief account by Goldrich of his naval career.

ShortSummary
Ts memoir (81pp), written in 1991 as a series of impressions, describing his basic training as a seaman in HMS RALEIGH in Cornwall, where the actor Sir Michael Redgrave was a fellow rating (June - August 1941); his appointment to HMS CAMBRIDGE, a coastal battery in Devon, for anti-aircraft gunnery training (September - December 1941); his service as a wireless telegraphist in HMS OBDURATE (17th Destroyer Flotilla, Home Fleet) from September 1942 - April 1944, with particular reference to the successful defence of Convoy JW51B to North Russia against heavy German surface attack on 31 December 1942, a visit to the Azores, and another Arctic convoy in January 1944 on which OBDURATE was damaged by a torpedo; and his appointment to LST 5 during her time in dockyard hands in Belfast (November 1944 - May 1945) and when based on Madras, India for service in the Bay of Bengal and the Far East (June - December 1945). The memoir, to which some poems are appended, includes an interesting assessment of the qualities of OBDURATE's commanding officer and some very useful comments, from the standpoint of an 'hostilities only' rating, about conditions and behaviour on the lower deck and naval discipline in general.

ShortSummary
Ts memoirs (200pp), written in the 1980s, of twin brothers Frank (the author) and Fred, describing their rather socially deprived childhood years in the Sheffield area (1919 - 1933), their entry into the RN boys training establishment at Gosport (1934) and subsequent service together first as boys and ordinary seamen in the battle cruiser HMS HOOD in Home waters and the Mediterranean, including Non-Intervention Patrols during the Spanish Civil War (1935 - 1938), then in the destroyer HMS VORTIGERN in Home waters at the time of the Munich crisis (autumn 1938) and in shore establishments in Portsmouth (October 1938 - May 1939); Fred's service in M A/S B 3 based on Portland (May - December 1939) and then attached to the Mediterranean Fleet for operations along the North African coast until she was badly damaged by a mine (January 1940 - early 1941), his service in coastal shipping during the evacuation from Crete and off North Africa (early 1941 - early 1942) and as coxswain of ML 1005 for anti-submarine and coastal patrols out of Alexandria (March - summer 1942), his passage back to the United Kingdom via South Africa (early 1943) and his service as coxswain of MTB 621 (55th MTB Flotilla) for convoy protection and offensive operations in the North Sea and English Channel, including service off the Normandy beachhead during the landings (summer 1943 - 1945) and his post-war service in experimental MTBs (1945 - 1949); and Frank's service in the shore base at Portland (May-December 1939), in MTB 19 based on Portsmouth (early 1940), in the Q ship HMS ORCHY for anti-submarine patrols in the SW Approaches (1940), in MA/S B 22 based on Southampton (1941 - 1942), as coxswain of MTB 624 (also 55th MTB Flotilla) for the same operations as MTB 621 (1942 - late 1944) and then of MTB 759, based on Ostend (late 1944 - May 1945), and finally in shore appointments (1945 - 1950). The memoirs offer valuable insights into the harshness of boys' training in the 1930s, the poor living standards and lack of consideration of the lower deck at that time and the particular spirit and camaraderie of all ranks of Coastal Forces during the Second World War.

The diaries also include very interesting entries about his professional outlook and aspirations, his fellow wardroom officers and the captains and admirals (notably Admirals of the Fleet Sir James Somerville and Sir Algernon Willis, Admirals Sir Geoffrey Miles and Sir Guy Russell and Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Troubridge) in the two ships, the spirit, discipline and humour of the ships companies and the operations of the Italian navy and Axis air forces in the Mediterranean. With the diaries are some anecdotal ts memoirs (70pp) of his naval career, 1919 - 1956, with especial reference to his service as a midshipman in the battle cruiser HOOD (1922 - 1924) and as torpedo officer with a submarine flotilla in Home waters (1934 - 1936) and his life in industry after retiring from the Royal Navy (1957 - 1969).

ShortSummary
A collection of 8 ms letters (29pp in all) to his mother in Middlesex, the first, undated letter referring to aspects of his training as a naval rating in the United Kingdom and the remainder to his service as an ordinary seaman in the monitor HMS EREBUS during and after her passage via the Cape from this country to Trincomalee, Ceylon, December 1941 - April 1942. The correspondence includes some useful details about his duties and routine in the ship and also offers an insight into a civilian in uniform's reactions to life on the lower deck and the progress of the war, while there are good descriptions of the generous hospitality extended to the ship's company at Cape Town and Durban, South Africa. Smith was killed in action during the major Japanese air raid on Ceylon on 9 April 1942.

ShortSummary
Photocopied ts transcript (165pp) of letters written to his family during his service as a Wireless Telegraphist in the Royal Navy, September 1934 - April 1942, covering his training in Portsmouth and then service in the light cruiser HMS LEANDER in the Mediterranean, including an account of the early days of the Spanish Civil War, 1935 - 1937, his service in the Royal Naval Wireless Station in Hong Kong during which his letters mention the Sino-Japanese War, 1937 - 1939, his subsequent service in the light cruiser HMS CAPETOWN in the Mediterranean, including his account of the landings at Mersa Kuba, and finally in the aircraft carrier HMS HERMES in the Indian Ocean from July 1941 until his death when the ship was sunk by Japanese aircraft outside Trincomalee Harbour on 9 April 1942; the letters say little about his duties but are interesting because of his political and social observations about naval and colonial life.

ShortSummary
Ms diary (100pp) for August 1914 - May 1915, possibly initially kept by another rating, with daily entries covering his service as a Royal Fleet Reserve able seaman in the battleship HMS CANOPUS, which was deployed on covering the passage of the BEF to France (August 1914), then as a guardship in the South Atlantic and South American waters carrying out shipping examination duties, but was also involved marginally in the Battles of Coronel and the Falkland Islands (September 1914 - January 1915), and finally with the Eastern Mediterranean Squadron during the Dardanelles operations on patrol duties and bombardment of the Turkish forts and in support of the Allied landings (March - May 1915). The diary also occasionally gives vent to lower deck frustrations over the shortage of rations, unwarranted punishments, inconsiderate behaviour by the officers and the preferential treatment of German survivors of the Falklands action.

FullSummary
White Ensign flown by HMS Birkenhead at the Surrender of the High Seas Fleet, 21 November 1918.
The light cruiser HMS Birkenhead was completed in 1915. She joined the 3rd Light Cruiser Squadron, Grand Fleet and fought at Jutland in 1916. Her main armament was 10 x 5.5 inch guns. The Armistice with Imperial Germany came into effect on 11 November, 1918, and Article XXIII of the terms demanded the surrender of the bulk of the High Seas Fleet. At dawn on the 21 November, 370 ships of the Grand Fleet escorted 16 capital ships, 7 cruisers and 49 destroyers of the High Seas Fleet into internment in Scapa Flow, and marked the end of German sea power at this time.
This White Ensign was donated to the Imperial War Museum in 1978.

FullSummary
The White Ensign is worn by all HM Ships in commission and by all Royal Navy shore establishments. Some Civilian authorities with Naval connections, for example the Royal Yacht Squadron, and the Imperial War Museum's ship HMS Belfast, have permission to use this ensign in special circumstances. The present design dates from 1801. The Iron Duke Class of battleships of the 1911 programme were the third and last group of British 13.5inch gun Dreadnoughts and the last British battleships to burn coal. HMS Iron Duke, built by Cammell Laird at Portsmouth was launched on 12 October 1912. In August 1914 she became flagship of the Home Fleet and flagship of the Commander in Chief, Grand Fleet, Admiral Sir John Jellicoe. HMS Iron Duke saw action at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. It is believed that this White Ensign was flown by HMS Iron Duke during the Battle of Jutland. During the Second World War HMS Iron Duke served as a depot ship. She was bombed and damaged at Scapa Flow in October 1939 and had to be beached but continued in service until the end of the war. She was sold for scrap in 1946.

FullSummary
Naval rum jar from Gibraltar used during the 1960's.
The daily tot of the rum issue had bargaining power among the ratings and as soon as the tot was drawn it was handed over to the person granting a favour who drank most of it but was expected to hand back a token to be 'seen off' by the donor. During the Second World War 'Hostilities Only' ratings introduced their own version of tot barter by stipulating the quantity of the issue they were prepared to offer and they were categorised as 'sippers' or 'gulpers' depending on how much was taken. This practice was regarded with disgust by long service ratings.
The Navy's rum was originally from Jamaica but more recently was made up from a blend of rums from Demerara, Trinidad and Barbados. It arrived in the victualling yards at 140 degrees over proof, it was then watered down to a strength of 95.5 degrees under proof before being issued.
The rum issue was abolished on 1 August 1970 and in compensation £72,000 was given to the new Sailor's Fund to be used for the benefit of the ratings. Chief and Petty Officers were now allowed to buy spirits in their messes, previously only allowed to officers and junior ratings were allowed an increased ration of tinned beer.
Rum is still used to 'Splice the Main Brace' when each officer and rating is issued with one-eighth of a pint of spirits or 12 ounces of beer if spirits are unavailable.

ShortSummary
A Naval instructional film: an old salt (a Gunnery Petty Officer) 'conjures up' a conducted tour of a representative cruiser, «HMS London» in Scapa Flow, for a young man about to enter the Navy.

FullSummary
The deck fittings, armament, bridge and other superstructure (of «HMS London» after refit) are studied from bow to stern, with the 'tour' interrupted by film illustrating the working of equipment: an anti-aircraft action, the launching and recovery of a Walrus reconnaissance plane, the firing of torpedoes etc. Brief explanations of the physical structure of the ship and of the electrical systems on which its 'life' depends are introduced into a below decks tour which shows a lower steering position and the engine room, and gives a cursory impression of crew's quarters etc. Besides basic knowledge of ship's equipment, the film also seeks to convey a few more abstract lessons on naval vocabulary, customs (role of Marines), traditions (feature film footage of 19th Century naval battle) and emotions, particularly the sailor's feeling of attachment to 'his' ship. Summing up the complexity and potential of the modern war ship, the Petty Officer tells the youth "the rest is up to you, son".

ShortSummary
Ships of the British Home Fleet pay goodwill visits to islands in the West Indies and then join Canadian ships for joint exercise in the North Atlantic.

FullSummary
After some scenes from the outward voyage (including refuelling of a destroyer by a fleet auxiliary at sea) the film reports on the visits of various ships (mainly «HMS Ceylon», «Bulwark» and «Maidstone») to Jamaica, Grenada, Barbados, Guadeloupe, Aruba, and Trinidad (open days, friendly sporting fixtures, entertainments, tourism etc). The reunited fleet heads north, calling at Bermuda; the film at this stage illustrates various duties and activities on board: signalling, meteorological operations, laundry, galley, NAAFI, medical facilities, delivery of mail, issue of rum ration. Rendezvous with the Canadians is made at Halifax, and the exercises (mainly anti-submarine) take place, guns, torpedoes and depth charges, Sea Hawk, Sea Venom (and Tracker?) aircraft are all used (but not linked by film into any pattern). The fleets separate with cheers, the "dual purpose" of Naval training and a mission of goodwill having been "served well."

ShortSummary
The world tour by Edward, Prince of Wales, on board «HMS Renown», 1920.

FullSummary
(Reel 1) The Prince, wearing his naval uniform, comes on board «HMS Renown» at Portsmouth harbour on 14th March, shaking hands with Rear-Admiral Sir Lionel Halsey and Captain Dudley B N North. With the Prince as travelling companions are Lord Louis Mountbatten and Colonel Grigg (who do not really appear in the film until the final reel). An animated map shows the ship's progress. It visits first Barbados where the Prince inspects a detachment of the West Indies Regiment, and the governor holds a garden party. While the «Renown» passes through the Panama Canal the Prince inspects the local US Army garrison, and President Belisario Porras comes on board. At San Diego the Prince addresses the people of the USA. As everywhere on the visit, there are numerous journalists and cameramen. At Honolulu in the Hawaiian islands the Prince meets US troops and British expatriates. (Reel 2) At Suva, capital of Fiji, the Prince is given a welcome ceremony and Kava is brewed. The «Renown» goes on to Auckland harbour, New Zealand, where the Prince inspects the local regiment. Schoolchildren in formation spell out WELCOME in a stadium. At Rotorua the Prince talks with Maoris who served in France in the First World War, while Prime Minister W F Massey and Minister of Militia Sir Joseph Cook watch. The Prince visits the Maori villages of Chinemutu, near sulphur springs, and Whakarewarewa, (Reel 3) where he gives a speech and watches Hakka and Poi dances. Back on the ship the junior officers perform a 'Hakka' of their own. Geysers and mud pots are shown. The ship goes on to Wellington, and the Prince visits the "Southern Alps". On to Australia. In a stadium in Melbourne children give a physical fitness demonstration and maypole dance. (Reel 4) The «Renown» arrives at Sydney and a military escort takes the Prince to Centennial Park. It is the Prince's birthday, 23rd June. The ship continues on to Western Australia. The Prince visits Perth and goes further inland, seeing Australian fauna such as kangaroos, water buffalo and flamingoes ("native wild fowl"). Loggers are seen at work in a jarrah forest. A view of Mundaring Reservoir. The train journey from Perth to Adelaide includes views of local aborigines, (Reel 5) and a "typical" outback railway halt. In Adelaide the Prince unveils a statue of Edward VII. For the remainder of the voyage «HMAS Australia» escorts the «Renown», which visits Hobart, Tasmania. On board the «Renown» on the way back to Britain are various "ship's mascots" for zoos: a cockatoo, two rare lizards, emu chicks, a Dominican tortoise, opossums, parrots, and a wallaby. On arrival in Samoa the locals pay homage to the Prince. (Reel 6) The film jumps back to 17th April, the first occasion on which the «Renown» crossed the equator. The full crossing the line ceremony involves the Prince, Mountbatten and Grigg all being ducked, and Halsey receiving "the Order of the Old Sea Dog". The cruise continues, with practice for the 15-inch guns. The ship calls at Port of Spain, Trinidad, and then at Bermuda, before returning to Portsmouth. The Prince says goodbye to the ship's company and boards the train for London.

Reel One. Cameraship «HMS Eagle» leads the NATO force out of the Firth of Forth - «HMS Illustrious» followed by «USS Wright», «HMS Vanguard», «HMS Swiftsure» and destroyers. CUs as armourers fix sonobuoys on a centreline rack on a Firefly. Another aircraft straightens its wings. USN Piasecki HUP-1 Retriever flies past. HA from the Flyco as «Eagle» launches 800 Squadron Attackers from her two bow catapults. Firefly AS.6 257 makes a free take-off. Firefly 259 (WJ 116) lands on and taxies forward over the lowered crash barrier to park. CU of Yeoman Saunders operating a signal searchlight - behind him flutters the numeral flag Zero, indicating a halt in flying operations. MS along the deck as Blackburn Firebrand 129 of 827 takes off, followed by 122. Attacker 108 taxies past left to right, its wing tips folded. Another Attacker is pushed aft by deck crew, its tail wheel in a hitch. A Firebrand is refuelled. CUs as Electricians Mate Purvis and Electrician's Mate (Artificer) Dyer top up a trolley full of batteries. Two Firebrands land on. A Firebrand folds wings. A Sea Hornet NF.21 flies overhead. «Eagle» closes on the port quarter of RFA «Olna», which has two hose lines deployed on derrick rigs - a marine party hauls on hose line and the end of the hose comes aboard «Eagle». Lieutenant Bevir takes readings with a sextant, which are recorded by Midshipman West. HA as Fireflies are manoeuvred about the flightdeck - manually and with the help of a tractor. CUs of men on the spotting bridge - the binoculars are protected from spray or bright sunlight by perspex hoods. A seaman reports by telephone. A Naval Airman Photographer records operations. CUs as a 6-barrelled RP 50 Mk VI Bofors mounting is trained and elevated - the gun crew are at ease and one barrel is still capped. MSs of a single Bofors Mk IX (?) mounting and CUs of the layer. Deck crew relax beside the island. LA of SW.RDF scanning. Sequence showing petty officers enjoying their rum issue. Men swab the deck - one sweeps water from a brass deck plate. LS-MS from camera on portside catwalk by arrester wires as Firefly 261 lands on. A second aircraft aborts its landing attempt and goes overhead, hook trailing. 260 lands on. LA.MS to Deck Landing Control Officer Lieutenant Drake, batting an aircraft down - he gives the cut signal. LS as «HMS Swiftsure» flashes a signal - in the background is «Illustrious». View from cat walk as Attacker 112 lands on, followed by 114 and 117. Deck crew free an Attacker from arrester wire, actually lifting the rear of the aircraft off the deck to allow the wire to retract. Further sequence showing refuelling from RFA «Olna» - the Battle Class destroyer «HMS Solebay» is preparing to refuel from the tanker's starboard side. Piasecki Retriever alights on the flightdeck and is chocked up - the Air Engineer Officer, Commander Hawkes, talks with Lieutenant Eagen USN, the helicopter's pilot. Reel Two. Onboard «HMS Vanguard». Inspection of Marines' equipment before the ship leaves her Scottish anchorage. At sea - a rating operates a signal searchlight, and «Swiftsure», in line astern, answers the signal. Ahead of «Vanguard», the three carriers commence a turn to port. Rating with signal flags - the International Code (Answering) pennant and flag 'V'. Various shots of ratings looking through binoculars and a CPO with a telescope. The sea is increasing as storm force winds begin to blow. The carriers execute a turn to starboard. XLS of «USS Wright» in stormy sea. Spray and broken water come in over «Vanguard's» bows - the True Wind Speed gauge is recording 49 knots. LA to black smoke issuing from the after funnel. The sea is moderating and «Vanguard» works up to full speed, producing a fine bow wave and a streaming wake. Brief sequence showing cameraship and the Canadian cruiser «Quebec» (31) refuelling from the RFA «Wave Premier» in a heavy sea, and longer section showing the Norwegian destroyer «Bergen» refuelling from «Vanguard» - there is some spillage, and wind-blown streaks of oil stain the «Bergen's» side. Sequence showing «Vanguard» weighing anchor - the cable is hosed down and scrubbed as it comes in - the carrier «USS Midway» (41) can be seen in the background. HA onto anchor as it comes clear of the water - it is covered in thick mud. «Vanguard» heads out to sea followed by «Swiftsure» and destroyers - conditions are calm but hazy. The carriers turn to starboard. XLS, «USS Wright». LS of «HMS Eagle» - «Vanguard» and the carrier execute a turn to starboard and «Eagle» moves from the port quarter onto the battleship's starboard quarter. View from focsle to A and B turrets and bridge. A game of deck hockey is played on the quarterdeck. LS off the port beam of «Eagle» - two aircraft take off. An Attacker passes overhead, hook down. «Eagle» recovers aircraft. Sequence showing a service conducted in the ship's chapel. Reel Three. Continuation of sequence inside ship's chapel. Sequence showing the mixing and issue of the rum ration. LSs of «Eagle» and a Firebrand in flight. CU as 15-inch guns of B turret are raised and lowered - inside the turret, the gunlayer operates the elevating controls - CU of the display lights on the Safety Firing Indicator. «HMS Eagle» and her planeguard destroyer turn hard a'starboard - they are obscured by their funnel smoke. XLS off port bow of «HMS Illustrious». Sequence showing «Vanguard» refuelling from a Wave Class tanker - «HMS Swiftsure» refuels on the tanker's port side. Short sequences showing the working of the bridge operating room, where the task group's courses are plotted, helmsman at the wheel in the lower steering room, plotters at the main display in the air direction room, telegraph repeater and ERAs standing ready to adjust oil sprayer in one of the furnaces in the boiler room. MS of Weapon Class destroyer (either «Battleaxe» or «Broadsword») steaming close alongside to starboard as she refuels from «Vanguard». Further scenes in the ship's boiler room. Reel Four-Ten. LSs of TG.175 assembled at Greenock - LS off the port bow of «Vanguard» with the American heavy cruiser «Des Moines» (134) lying astern. Sequence showing flag raising ceremony on «Vanguard». Camera in smallcraft closes on port bow of the battleship «USS Wisconsin» (64). Service on the quarterdeck of «Vanguard». Cleaning ship - a rating cleans the lamps hanging about the ship's bell, while others wash down and polish metal parts. Mayor of Gresnock visits «Vanguard». Admiral Brind comes aboard, and later receives an American Vice-Admiral. «Vanguard» is also visited by an Air Marshal and USN Rear-Admiral and Captain. The American Vice-Admiral departs. «Vanguard» weighs anchor - the cable is hosed down and scrubbed as it comes in, CU of joining shackle passing round cable holder, the mud-covered anchors are hove up clear of the water. LS from shore as «Vanguard» prepares to sail - the American destroyer «USS Vogelgesang» (862) steams right to left in the foreground, and in the background is «USS Midway» (41). The rest of the reel is mainly a compilation of scenes found elsewhere in the film record. Reel Seven. Onboard «HMS Vanguard». Interior of a gun turret as the crew go through gun drill. Marines receive instruction in the use of the Bren gun. Piasecki Retriever from «USS Wright» hovers, lowering Mr G F Goodall from the Admiralty onto the quarterdeck. Men play deck hockey. LS of «Eagle» and an escorting Weapon Class destroyer - an aircraft lands on the carrier. More hockey. The battleship enters the still waters of a Norwegian fjord - saluting guns are fired and the crew fall in for entering port. Sequence showing VIPs visiting «Eagle» - see Reel Eleven. Reel Eleven. Sequence shot in harbour of Oslo - the cameraman embarks in a motor boat and moves among the naval vessels gathered there - the French frigate «Bambara» (F.719), the Dutch «Van Zijill», the Belgian minesweeper «A F Dufour» (M.903). The boat circles the cruiser «Swiftsure», where men are over the side for painting ship. The light carrier «USS Wright» is moored, Avengers parked aft. LSs of «Eagle» and the heavy cruiser «USS Columbus» (74). Boat passes below the stern of the amphibious force flagship «USS Mount Olympus» (GC.8). Alongside is a later Battle Class destroyer with, outboard of her, the minesweeper «HMS Bramble» and the submarine «HMS Ambush». Liberty parties from «Mount Olympus» are brought ashore by the ship's boats. Sequence showing a press conference onboard «USS Columbus» - present are Admiral McCormick USN, Admiral Brind and the French Admiral Lemonnier. Sequence on the quayside as Admiral Lemonnier arrives - presumably to be taken out to «Columbus» for the press conference - watched by some local spectators, he stands chatting with an aide - visible nearby is the «Van Zijill» (F.811). Sequence showing the arrival of General Ridgway in a Lockheed Constellation at Oslo to be greeted by Admiral Lemonnier, and the General's reception by Admiral Brind onboard «HMS Eagle». King Haakon VII is also received onboard. Reel Twelve. Onboard «HMS Eagle». MS along the deck of «Eagle» to ensign staff. LA of man adjusting pitch-change mechanism on the propeller hub of a Firefly 6. Another man reaches through a small access panel to adjust Firefly's starting system. Two Fireflies are run up to test their engines - the first aircraft has not had the spinner replaced. Aircraft mechanics open the engine cowlings to change the sparkplugs on a Firebrand.

ContextDescription
Summary: for this exercise, HMS Illustrious had three squadrons embarked: 824 Squadron flying Firefly AS.6s, and No 4 Squadron and No 860 Squadron of the Royal Netherlands Navy flying respectively Fireflies and Sea Furies. By this time Illustrious had been designated a trials and training carrier and had played some part in training up RNN squadrons for service in the Karel Doorman (ex-Venerable). HMS Eagle operated 812 and 814 Squadrons in Firefly AS.6s, 800 and 803 Squadrons in Attacker F.1s, and 827 Squadron in Firebrand TF 5s. 812 Squadron was embarked on Eagle only for the duration of the exercise. It is interesting to note, with reference to the replenishment sequences, that there was some press criticism in the United States of the length of time the carrier Eagle had to spend refuelling from a British tanker, compared to the time it took to replenish American carriers from tankers specially designed to transfer fuel at sea with high speed pumps. On the other hand there was favourable comment on Eagle's performance in the storm conditions encountered during the exercise, when the British carrier was able to maintain a speed of 25 knots, while the larger American carrier Midway was virtually hove-to because heavy seas had smashed the deck-edge lift curtains, allowing water into the aircraft hangar. The film also shows the fine sea-keeping qualities of the battleship Vanguard, dry and steady in the severe weather.

ceremonies, British - customary: crossing the line

IndexPlaces
Australia & Sydney, NSW

IndexUnits

ShortSummary
«HMS Adamant» brings returning service men and women into Sydney harbour. On the voyage to Australia they enjoy a boisterous crossing of the line.

FullSummary
Opening sequence shows passengers looking out over the rail as the ship enters Sydney harbour - the cameraman focuses on two couples their arms linked affectionately. Passengers include Australian troops, RN and FAA personnel. Cut to main sequence showing crossing of the line. The ceremony is given extra interest by the presence of a large number of women, whose ritual ducking is carried out with great gusto. At the end of the ceremony a fire hose is turned on the crowd, and the canvas pool is unlashed, the water spilling over the deck. As the men stand in the emptied pool a life-jacket throwing fight begins, and the pool quickly becomes choked with thrown jackets - more hose spraying and jacket throwing is starting up as the film ends.

ShortSummary
An excellent broadside view of HMY BRITANNIA practising with her Paying Off Pennant.

ContextDescription
The Paying Off Pennant is a long flag which bears the St George Cross, the length of which is determined by the length of the ship (in BRITANNIA's case 412 feet) and the number of years the vessel has been in commission. It is traditionally flown from the mainmast immediately before paying-off.
HMY BRITANNIA flew her Paying Off Pennant on 21 November 1997 on leaving London, on 22 November 1997 on arriving in Portsmouth and on 7 December 1997, the final Sunday she was in commission.

FullSummary
The WRNS was still a new service in 1918 but Stanhope Forbes gives their activities a comfortable Edwardian domesticity, emphasising the traditional nature of their work rather than their radical status.
The girls in the foreground wear a variety of tunics and collars. When the service was started in November 1917 the Wrens were not allowed to wear the traditional blue and white striped tunic collar worn by male sailors. However, so many of them obtained and wore these collars as keepsakes from their sweethearts that the authorities swiftly gave in and allowed this addition to the uniform. Forbes was probably aware of this which might suggest another relationship between the Wren and the sailor in the background. Certainly the far sailor’s admiring glance seems directed at the girls rather than at their work.
Forbes lived for many years in Cornwall. He was a leading member of the Newlyn School which specialised in plein-air landscapes and genre paintings of the local fishing community. His Wrens sit at their sail-making as they might sit together quilting and the girl in the background raises her heel diffidently, a coy gesture which belies her uniform and professional status.
The scene is at one of the Royal Navy’s largest southern bases, at Devonport in Plymouth, across the Tamar river from Cornwall.

ContextDescription
image: A genre painting of an interior below deck on a warship. Portholes open to the left of the image. In the foreground three women sit binding the edges of a large sail sheet. In the background there is a work table. A girl in full WRNS rating uniform and hat stands talking to a blue-uniformed sailor over another length of sailcloth, while at the other end of the table stands a sailor in white tunic and naval cap looking over to the group in the foreground as he hangs a chain on the wall. The low-ceilinged room is lit more by daylight from the open portholes than by the small lamps hung from the ceiling. The room is cluttered with fabric and a thick chain hangs down from the ceiling on the right hand side.

FullSummary
As in the First World War when the WRNS was first established, the role of the WRNS was to take over work ashore so that men could be on active service at sea. By the Second World War, the WRNS was promoted as the most stylish of the womens’ services. The clean lines of the WRNS uniform are enhanced by the modernist graphic design of this poster with bold areas of flat colour and a suggestion of the airbrush technique which gained popularity during the war. The artist is not named but has much in common with the British War Office poster designer Abram Games.

ContextDescription
whole: the image occupies the majority. The title is integrated and located in the lower half, in white and in grey. The text is partially integrated and placed along the top edge, in blue, and in the lower quarter, in brown. All set against a white background.
image: a three-quarter length depiction of a woman dressed in the cap and uniform of a WRNS rating, set against a blue sea and horizon. She gazes out towards the right of the poster and salutes with her gloved right hand.

FullSummary
The British Navy traditionally trained boys from an early age, offsetting the hardships of service at sea with the rewards of reliable traditions and comradeship. Brangwyn was commissioned in 1917 by the British Ministry of Information to contribute six lithographs of life at sea to a series of propaganda prints. His prints follow the experiences of young recruits as they become part of a team trained in boat and gunnery drill.
Plum ‘duff’ (a hearty steamed pudding made from suet and dried fruit) was a traditional and necessary remedy for the bitter working conditions at sea. The image aims to reinforce public affection for the Navy and faith in its endurance.
In 1917 the Ministry of Information commissioned nine artists to produce six lithographs each on different aspects of the war effort. This is an example of one of the 'Efforts'. A further twelve artists were commissioned to produce a single image representing the 'Ideals' for which the war was fought. All the lithographs were produced in editions of 200 and the subscription price for a complete set was 100 guineas. The prospectus published on January 1, 1919 described the series as 'a first attempt by a number of British artists, working in unison, to put on record some aspects of the activities called forth by the Great War, and Ideals by which those activities were inspired. The prints were published by the Fine Art Society and produced under the direction of Ernest Jackson, himself a contributor to the 'Ideals' series.

ContextDescription
image: Below decks on board ship, a group of youths in naval rating uniform sit at a wooden table. In the foreground two boys sit on a bench, their backs to the viewer, holding a pudding bowl and spoon at the ready. An older sailor approaches from the left, ceremoniously holding up a large bowl containing a round, steamed pudding.
