A Guards Armoured Division pipe band makes its way towards the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. Major-General Allan H S Adair (commander Guards Armoured Division) lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. March to Palais de Justice. Cardinal van Roey; Prince Jean of Luxembourg; Sir Hugh Knatchbull-Hugessen (British Ambassador) and the Belgian Queen Mother watch the presentation of colours to Guards Armoured Division members by the Burgermeister of Brussels.
II. 'MONSOONS IN BURMA.' Heavy monsoon rains and wind lash a tented Royal Air Force (RAF) encampment in Burma. The commentary outlines the difficulties of operating aircraft in such conditions. RAF ground crews prime the engines of a South East Asia Command (SEAC) Consolidated B-24 Liberator bomber "Miss Jeanette". Protective tarpaulins are pulled from the twin .50-inch Browning machine gun turret of a B-24. A B-24 Liberator runs up its engines in driving rain. SEAC B-24 Liberators take off for a sortie against Bangkok. Operational footage shows bombs dropping and impacting over the target area. B-24 aircraft land on their return from Bangkok.
III. 'NEWS FROM ENGLAND.' United States (US) enlisted men embark on the British liner «Queen Elizabeth» for their return journey to home, family and civilian life. US servicemen wave to camera from the decks of «Queen Elizabeth». The «Queen Elizabeth» sets sail from the Clyde on its long journey to New York. The liner «Queen Mary» also on troop relocation duties, navigates the Hudson River on its arrival at New York Harbour. The liner is shown passing Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty on its journey to its mooring point (East River ?). Film footage taken from an airship shows thousands of US servicemen crammed on the decks of «Queen Mary». «HMS Renown» is shown at anchor in Plymouth Sound during the visit of US President Harry S Truman to the ship to meet King George VI. A contingent of the ship's Royal Marines form a guard of honour for the visiting US President. President Truman and King George VI shake hands on the deck of the British battleship.

[the CONSTRUCTION OF A "CORDUROY" ROAD IN SOUTHERN HOLLAND] [Allocated]

IndexPlaces
Netherlands & <south>

ShortSummary
Attempts are made by the Royal Engineers to improve the poor road communications in 8th Corps' sector of 2nd Army's front near Venraij.

FullSummary
The cameraman surveys a newly-laid 'corduroy' road consisting of logs of roughly equal length laid side by side over a cross-country road or track obliterated by heavy rainfall and incessant military traffic; sappers (possibly from a 11th Armoured Division RE unit) are seen trimming with axes the ragged ends of the logs to form a continuous straight edge. The road is seen being extended by the addition of more logs which are then nailed securely to the ground. Sand dumped onto the logs by a tipper lorry is then scattered by the spadeful over the roadway in order to provide its surface with both compactness and protection from excessive wear and tear.

ContextDescription
Summary: See with A70 200-2, which features a Canadian logging company at work in southern Holland, and with A70 182-1, 2, and 12 for footage showing traffic coping with the de Peel region's poor quality road network.
Remarks: Good footage. Best seen with the items of ciné material listed above, notably A70 200-2.

IV. Gymnastics competition in Budapest. Germany competes against Hungary at the international sports hall. Scenes on horse and bars. Hungarian Ferenc Pataki wins.
V. Steeplechase race in France. Athletes compete in seven-kilometres-plus steeplechase at Lyon (Vichy France). Rochard wins.
VI. German medical research at Behring Institute in Lvov. Exterior view of swastika-adorned Institute; bust of German bacteriologist Emil von Behring inside. German scientists have made Institute leading centre in world in fight against diphtheria, very prevalent in Eastern Europe. Display of Behring vaccine. Laboratory technicians breed lice, examine matter through microscopes and artificially infect the yolk of a broken egg. Doctor vaccinates a girl in the arm.
VII. Germans repair railways wrecked by Russians German railway repair shop near Kiev repairs bridges, track and other installations. Labourers work with rocks and timber on railways and bridge, over which a train passes.
VIII. German front line within sight of Leningrad. Animated map of Leningrad area. Cartoons on hut signs refer to Dr Erich Lengnich (company doctor ?) and other esoteric figures. Soldiers construct wooden covers over trench, another washes himself with handfuls of snow and others scoop out thawed snow from trench with their helmets. SS company chief arrives in trench on daily visit of inspection and returns heils from men. Leningrad is visible on horizon and German front line passes through suburban tram terminus. Russian tanks which attempted to break Germans' iron ring around city lie destroyed in snow. Soldier fires 8cm mortar and 17cm K in Mörserlafette opens fire.
IX. Germans repel Russian attack on Toropetz Animated map of Moscow area. Bolshevik forces surrounded by Germans on Toropetz front are bombarded by 10.5cm le FH 18 and 15cm FH 18 artillery. Shells explode in the snow. Russian forces in distance are attacked by anti-tank and MG34 fire, leaving battlefield littered with wrecked tanks including US M3A3s and Russian T-34s. Frozen corpses protrude from the snow. Renewed enemy attack is warded off by mortar and artillery fire ordered by phone. night barrage continues till dawn, as shells explode in the snow. Some of the 4,200 Russian prisoners walk by; figure of 14,000 Russian dead suggests enemy's determination. Russian trucks (with snow chains), guns and anti-aircraft 76.2mm ZP obr 1938g stand abandoned in snow.
X. Rescue of «Atlantis» crew and sinking of Norwegian tanker. Crew of auxiliary cruiser «Atlantis» are rescued from six dinghies and lifeboats after the sinking of their ship by a British cruiser («HMS Devonshire», 23/11/1941) in the South Atlantic. Small cutter with survivors comes alongside Type IXC U-boat, one of whose crew sports an ace of spades on his cap. U-boat then tows six small boats in line astern, while some Italian submarines which helped rescue arrive in St Nazaire (late December 1941) on board Calvi Class submarine, with German officers on conning tower with Italian commander. French advertisement for Byrrh visible on wall. German sailors say farewell to Italian comrades. Ashore at Kaiserhof Hotel in Berlin Grossadmiral Raeder greets Kapitän zur See Rogge of «Atlantis» who presents his crew. Close-up of Auxiliary Cruiser badge. Flashback to action by «Atlantis» shows lookout on crow's nest, sighting of "British" tanker, alarm signal, breaking German Naval ensign, radio operator listening to hear British SOS signal, loading and firing 5.9-inch gun and tanker exploding after direct hits and becoming pall of oily black smoke. Rogge in merchant marine uniform scans scene with binoculars.

ContextDescription
Summary (item X): cameraman Ulrich Mohr recalled in "Atlantis - the Story of a German Raider" that only tanker sunk was Norwegian «Teddy», in Indian Ocean on 9/11/1940, destroyed by explosives which created dangerously visible column of black smoke.

ShortSummary
Sergeant Collins of the British AFPU team in Paris and an unknown US Army Officer place floral tributes on the grave of the Unknown Warrior at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe, watched over by a Colour party and a Guard of Honour from the 2nd French Armoured Division.

ContextDescription
Note: See with A70 136-1, 2, 3, 5, 137-1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and 140-9 for footage taken during the liberation of Paris. This material was probably intended for inclusion in a feature documentary on the N-W European campaign which was made under Roy Boulting's auspices. 'The True Glory', an Anglo-American production, filled this gap when Boulting's work did not materialise.
Remarks: Best seen with items listed above. Of interest in that a member of the AFPU - Sergeant Max Collins - is featured in this short piece of film.
Documentation/associated material: for a journalistic account of the liberation of Paris, including the dissension that split the Paris FFI, the German garrison commander's dilemma, and the reluctance of the US armies commanders to take on the burden of liberating and supplying Paris, read 'Is Paris Burning?' by Lapierre and Collins and see 'Journal de la Resistance' for film shot by the FFI before the Allies entered Paris.

FullSummary
A Guard of Honour consisting of troopers from the reconstituted Garde Republicaine greets the Allied Supreme Commander, General Eisenhower, and senior Allied military commanders at the Arc de Triomphe. The high ranking VIPs lay wreaths on the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. Eisenhower makes a short speech, which is relayed to the crowd through a US army interpreter, and then presents Georges Bidault (?), President of the Comité Nationale de la Resistance, a plaque commemorating the part played by the people of Paris in their own liberation. Large numbers of US servicemen and press photographers are present at the occasion. Other identifiable personalities among the VIPs include Lieutenant-General Bradley, Air Chief Marshal Tedder, Lieutenant-General Spaatz, Major-General Kepner, Air Marshal Leigh-Mallory, Admiral Ramsay, Lieutenant-General Bedell-Smith, Generals Juin and Koenig and Admiral d'Argenlieu. Lieutenant-General Simpson and Air Chief Marshal Harris are somewhere in Eisenhower's entourage.

ContextDescription
Note: See A70 153-5 for virtually identical but much shorter footage taken by Sergeant Harris. For coverage of other ceremonial occasions in Paris, refer to A70 144-1 and 2, 148-1 and 2, 155-8 and 9 and 157-9 and 10. Underscoring this footage is the irony that Eisenhower and SHAEF - whose leading lights are seen here - were anxious to avoid liberating Paris until the last possible moment.
Remarks: A good visual record of some of the more senior commanders in SHAEF and Allied forces.
